Medical Guidelines That Embrace the Humility of Uncertainty Could Help Doctors Choose Treatments With More Research Evidence Behind Them

Clinical guidelines greatly influence the way doctors administer care to their patients. In an article for The Conversation, Jaimo Ahn, a Gehring Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Michigan, and colleagues explain the use of medical guidelines to diagnose and treat certain situations. The researchers argue that the guidelines are currently based on weak or no evidence and suggest a new approach to medical guidelines built around the humility of uncertainty, in which care recommendations are only made when data is available to support the care.
