Alfred Hero, the U-M John H. Holland Distinguished University Professor of electrical engineering and computer science and co-corresponding author of the study, discusses developing a new model to predict better the communities formed by human gut microbes. Hero notes that the new algorithm could map out the entire landscape of possible communities, nearly 33 million, in merely minutes compared to conventional, current models that take days to months. The faculty expert highlights the process and development behind this machine learning.
