With evacuation efforts in full swing as Florida residents prepare for Hurricane Ian, it is essential to realize that choosing to evacuate when natural devastation is imminent is not always easy for some. Researchers have found that older adults may not be well prepared to address the health risks that occur during disasters. In an article for The Conversation, disaster researcher Sue Anne Bell, an assistant professor of Nursing at the University of Michigan, highlights reasons why the elderly may choose to forego evacuation in times of inclement weather and why it is vital to check on them.
