Flooding events cause catastrophic devastation with only a moment’s notice. Officials know of likely locations, like along rivers and other waterways, that are subject to flooding but cannot predict roads and neighborhood flooding events. Professor of hydrosystems engineering at the University of Michigan, Valeriy Ivanov, and colleagues are attempting to devise a way to better forecast flood occurrences. Ivanov outlines some challenges with developing this forecasting technology and its importance.
