Design Tricks Commonly Used to Monetize Young Children’s App Use

According to a new study conducted by Michigan Medicine, apps developed for preschool-aged children are not created with the child in mind. Some experts have called these tactics “dark patterns,” or tricks aimed to prolong gameplay, prompt children to re-engage with the app, exert purchase pressure, or make them watch ads. Jenny Radesky M.D., a developmental-behavioral pediatrician at University of Michigan Health C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital and researcher at Michigan Medicine, talks about the regulations that can be in place, such as restrictions and monitoring the apps that your child is on daily.
