Libby Hemphill, an associate professor of information at the U-M School of Information, discusses the difficulty in understanding the impact of social media on society despite the large amount of data created by social media. Partnering with Meta, U-M researchers worked to establish the Social Media Archive (SOMAR) to shed light on these processes regarding the impact of social media and advance the world’s understanding of critical social issues. Hemphill highlights SOMAR and its ability to create a foundation for addressing key research questions.
