Ford School of Public Policy Dean Michael S. Barr, Associate Dean and Poverty Solutions Director Luke Shaefer, and Sociology and African American Studies and courtesy faculty Alford A. Young Jr. discuss ways that policymakers and communities can combat poverty during COVID-19. They highlighted how many support sources, such as unemployment insurance and public assistance, essentially disappeared, especially for lower income families. They further note how relevant race and policy has been involved as well as preconditions for people that are greatly affected, such as income and health factors. Researchers offer suggestions and possible solutions on how to combat poverty, institutionalized racism, and more in their policy talk.
