Surgery can amplify greenhouse gases, solid waste and pollution generation. Amir Ghaferi, MD, MS, has begun to pay more attention to the waste because of U-M fourth year medical student Emily Jonhson. Johnson recently authored a paper that described a framework for surgery departments to look into environmental, financial and social factors in their operations in order to be more sustainable.
