Don Scavia, a U-M aquatic ecologist and professor emeritus, explains that western Lake Erie will have a smaller than average harmful algal bloom this summer, making it less severe than in recent years. Scavia notes that the blooms carry cyanobacteria, posing a risk to human and wildlife health and harming local economies as it impacts the shoreline, potentially forcing cities and their governments to treat the drinking water. The faculty expert further highlights the impact of this forecast.
