A new U-M study found the shallow sea that covered much of western North America 95 million years ago was as warm as today’s tropics. Sierra Peterson, U-M Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences assistant professor, geochemist, and study co-author explains how her team used fossil oyster shells as paleothermometers, analyzing 29 well-preserved specimens from a U.S. Geological Survey fossil collection. The faculty expert notes that this is a glimpse of what may be in store for future generations if we cannot control heat-trapping greenhouse gases.
