Many public and private entities use Automated License Plate Readers (ALPRs) to track drivers’ movements and locations. However, the use of this technology is unregulated, potentially leading to abuse and causing some communities to question their use. Noah Stein, a research assistant in the Science, Technology, and Public Policy program at the Ford School, explores the landscape and suggests a variety of policy options to better control the use of ALPRs and the data they collect.
