Virtual private networks, or VPNs, enable users to conceal activities and identities and make secure connections to other internet locations. A series of recent studies at the University of Michigan have questioned how accurately VPNs can ensure users’ privacy and security while living and working on the internet. Led by assistant professor of computer science and engineering Roya Ensafi and doctoral student Reethika Ramesh, the U-M researchers have performed a series of research projects under an effort they have called VPNalyzer to expose issues regarding VPNs.
