The United States Census Bureau defines a rural area as one that has a population less than two thousand five hundred people and occupies an archetypal place in the history, culture and mythology of the country. Surabhi Balachander, U-M Rackham graduate student, researches how rural people define their experience from their own perspective. She focuses on how environment and race intersect to create a rural identity.
