A new briefing from the University of Michigan’s Detroit Metro Area Communities Study showed a significant decrease in the unemployment rate as pandemic recovery efforts continue. Lydia Wileden, a research assistant with DMACS, suggests that it offers a more thorough picture of the local labor market because it offers a means of measurement for the employment situation of the city by direct experiences. The most significant declines in unemployment have been for residents of color and lower income levels, and the overall rate is still higher than the 8% pre-pandemic level.
