University of Michigan Alumnae Council’s Birthday Greeting campaign
The Alumnae Council’s annual Birthday Greeting campaign raises funds in support of programs
that positively impact women in the University of Michigan community.
Eula dePriest Marcks, ’33, originated the Birthday Greeting campaign in 1961 as a way to celebrate the 1817 founding of the University of Michigan each year on its birthday with gifts to support the advancement of women students.
Since 1961, the Birthday Greeting campaign has provided more than $2 million dollars toward programs having a direct impact on women at the University. It has also afforded an opportunity for alumnae and friends to celebrate the University’s influence on their own lives by supporting the next generation of women Wolverines.
About the 2020 – 2021 Birthday Greeting Recipient
The University of Michigan’s Henderson House was built in 1892 and is the oldest student residence and the only cooperative living program in the University residence system.
In 1914, the Alumnae Council started raising funds to provide “a residence for young women of intelligence and character who desire a college education, but have limited means.” At the end of World War II, they acquired the property at 1330 Hill Street, named it Henderson House, renovated it, and opened it to students in the Fall of 1945.
In 2020, as Henderson House celebrates its 75th anniversary with student residents, its mission to provide safe, affordable housing for female students at the University is more necessary than ever before. Today 28 undergraduate and graduate women live, work, and study together in this unique cooperative living community. They share responsibilities, build relationships, and learn skills that stay with them for the rest of their lives.
This year’s Birthday Greeting award will help Henderson House continue to be a critical resource for increasing access to education for all young women. Donations will help grow the Henderson House endowment, providing capital project funding for major upgrades, modernizations, and maintenance, helping ensure the success of cooperative living at Henderson House long into the future.
