Summer 2019 – It’s almost here!

June 15 marks the beginning of the summer season at Camp Michigania and we’re excited to continue the wonderful traditions that have been passed down from generation to generation. With the passion of our leadership team and returners, and the enthusiasm and new skills of our first-time staff members, we look forward to creating an unforgettable summer. We can’t wait for you to experience the Michigania magic with us!

Currently, we have a short waitlist for Week 11 (Aug. 24-31), or if you’d like to be added to the waitlist for other weeks (which ranges from 7 to 34 families), contact or 231 582-9191 for more information.

Final payments can also be submitted by logging into your account for online payment.

2019 Campers – Look for a pre-summer email in early June with updates and lots of helpful information on how you can help us make sure your week is the best!

Cancellation Policy – there have been updates to our cancellation policy, and all details can be found here.

Lawn Lunch Enhanced

Greg’s Grill, given in honor of Greg Fleming by camp staff alums who had the privilege of serving during Greg’s tenure as Camp Director, overlooks Walloon Lake, just out front of the dining hall.  Through the support of these camp staff alums, the former “lawn lunch” will have a whole new look for summer 2019.  The permanent covered canopy will allow grill service daily, except in extreme weather (and we won’t need your help holding down the canopy when it’s windy!), updated grilling and smoking equipment, an enhanced menu, and a spot for mid-afternoon smoothies (moved from the North Lounge).

Your Raffle Dollars at Work

Your support throughout the summer at the end of the week raffle allows us to enhance our programs and facility.  For the summer of 2019, we’ve added some new guns at riflery, purchased kegerators for our porch party and Keg & Koke, and replaced the carpet in the Ed Center (Furniture to follow next year).

Sustainability and Programming

Look for an infusion of sustainability in our morning programs for our kids’ groups, as we partnered winter semester with a group of Campus and Sustainability 391 students to look at ways to infuse sustainable programming into our morning rotations.

Keg & Koke Increase (and better beer!)

The donation for Keg & Koke has been $1 since its inception.  The quality of beer provided reflected the donation level.  Camps Council has recommended we raise the price 100% to $2 for Summer 2019, and, we’ll provide craft beer.  So, come join us at Keg & Koke, raise a (better) cup of beer, and relive the memories of your week.

Director’s Chat

The director’s chat will continue on Wednesday morning in the forum room, giving campers an opportunity to discuss the Strategic Plan and Camp Expansion you were surveyed about in January, the schedule shift for Summer 2020, or anything else you have questions, comments, or concerns about.

Check out the Camper Resources Webpage for everything you need to know about the coming summer. It includes program updates, new policies and guidelines, and our faculty forum lineup. Michiganual – The Camper Manual, will be available by June 7, 2019. Until then, the 2018 document will remain available online.

Mentoring relationships that come about at Camp/through the Camp network have been informal in the past, but we’re hoping to add to the informal relationships that occur through a mentor matching program for interested staff and campers/former campers/community members.  Facilitating the mentor matching may not result in a long-term mentor relationship, but we believe that this program will allow more potential for mentoring relationships to begin at Camp/through the camp community by connecting campers to staffers they may not otherwise connect with.

Members of the Camp Michigania Community interested in being matched as a mentor with a staff member should fill this form. Mentor and staff matches will be made throughout the summer – for mentors that are camping, you will be informed of your match on Monday of your week at Camp and we encourage you to meet up with the staffer you’ve been matched with.  For those not attending camp this summer, you will be matched throughout the summer and we encourage that you connect (at least initially) via email within two weeks.

Mentors will receive a copy of their matched staffer’s resume if they’ve opted to have one on file with camp for this purpose.  All staff members who have opted to have their resume available in this manner are also available in a binder in the Education Center.  Campers are encouraged to look through the book and identify if there are staffers they’d like to network with or potentially mentor in some capacity.

We look forward to your response and interest and our staff look forward to meeting and/or working with you.

Camp’s Council developed a comprehensive list, and at our Spring Meeting, selected There, there, by Tommy Orange, one of the 10 best books of the year according to the New York Times Book Review.

In addition to being available at most brick-and-mortar stores, and at the Camp Michigania store this summer, it can be purchased online from Amazon and Barnes and Noble.

Thanks for reading, and we look forward to seeing you this summer!

The input, enthusiasm, and commitment of the Camp’s Council have provided invaluable insight and guidance toward the continued success of Camp Michigania.
