Robert E. Park, 1887

As a reporter, Park became absorbed in the ideas of social problems. He then began to focus on the African American population in the U.S., becoming secretary to Booker T. Washington at the Tuskegee Institute. After joining the sociology faculty at the University of Chicago, he helped establish the foundations of the study of sociology.
