Congratulations! Graduation is an exciting and emotional time. Whether it took you three, four, five or even six years, it's quite an accomplishment to graduate from one of the most prestigious universities.
You are joining more than 440,000 U-M graduates in the Michigan alumni family. That's a big family, alright, and one that you ought to be very proud to be a member of.
Our goal at the Alumni Association is to serve U-M alumni by keeping you connected to other alumni and the University, providing valuable benefits to our members and offering programs that you value.
Here are the things you need to know now:
Wherever you go and whatever you do as a U-M alum, don't forget that the Alumni Association is here to serve you. If you have a question about Michigan, give us a call or drop us an email (800.847.4764, m.alumni@umich.edu) and we'll help you find the answer. Go Blue!
- All graduates from U-M are entitled to a free
one-year membership in the Alumni Association. Free. Gratis. No strings
attached. Take advantage of this whether you're receiving your bachelor's
degree, master's degree or PhD! To sign up, just fill
out our online form. Or, come by commencement
ticket pickup from April 21-24 (any extra tickets will be distributed at the Alumni Center on April 25). Everyone who signs
up by May 15 can also enter to win a 13” Apple MacBook! For a complete
list of member benefits, click
here.
- University-wide commencement ceremonies are Saturday,
April 26 in the Diag. They start at 10 a.m. Many schools
and colleges host their own ceremonies as well. For complete information on
eligibility, tickets, diplomas, etc., click
here. Check with your school or college for individual unit ceremonies.
- Stay connected with inCircle,
sort of a Michigan version of Facebook or MySpace. inCircle offers
all the basic functions of an online directory (the ability to search for
friends) plus the ability to create your own personal network, complete with
pictures. inCircle is great
for finding roommates, making connections with alumni and meeting people in
a new city—or just sitting around and seeing who you know! It's free
to all Alumni Association members (another reason to sign up for your free
membership)!
- Check out our Alumni
Career Services.
The Alumni Association offers a host of services and information about everything
is online so you can find what you want when you want it. Try our job board;
Alumni Networks, a program where you can find alumni in your field; and resources,
including resume and cover letter help and career assessments.
- Are you moving? Make your transition
easier with our relocation program.
We'll put you in touch with a friendly Michigan alum in the area you're moving
to. The host can tell you what neighborhoods are the best and give you the
lowdown on things to do. Also, you'll find information on our interstate moving
and storage discounts through Steven's Worldwide Van Lines.
- Free membership in your local
alumni club. Alumni Association
members are automatically members of their local alumni club. Many clubs get
together to watch football, get involved with community service and host social
events.
- Keeping your University email account.
The University will maintain your umich.edu email account for approximately
two months after graduation. After that time, you can either subscribe
to U-M Online or sign up for email forwarding (this is a forwarding
service, not an email account, that lets you keep your umich.edu address and
forwards mail
to your "real" address).
- Short-term health and renters insurance.
After graduation you might find yourself with no health coverage. Don't
risk going without; check out our program. We also
offer discounts on renters
insurance.
- See some of the famous alumni you're joining
in the alumni family. Michigan alumni are everywhere and involved
in practically every career field and industry on the planet. We've compiled
a list of some of the most
famous alumni and notable achievements at U-M. Maybe one day
we'll add you to the list!
