Academic Performance Guidelines
In order to continue receiving this merit-based scholarship, LEAD Scholars need to maintain a GPA at or above 2.0. It is in the best interest of the student to address the issue of low GPA at the first instance of it, as the University will begin to take action quickly, usually after two semesters with a GPA below 2.0. And, it will likely be impossible for a scholar to continue enrolling each semester with a low GPA, without petitioning the University to return.
Scholars must be in good academic standing with the University and/or their school/college. To that end, the LEAD Scholarship may be withdrawn, if any of these situations occur:
- The scholar receives two semesters (consecutive or not) below a 2.0 GPA
- The scholar’s cumulative GPA goes below a 2.0
- The scholar is placed on “suspension”, “enrollment withheld”, “mandatory leave” or any other such designation that requires the student to petition to return to U-M or apply for reinstatement to U-M
- The scholar is dismissed from the University
The Alumni Association will request the GPA data from the Registrar’s Office at the end or beginning of each semester, based on when the data becomes available.
As with any process, this serves as a guideline for LEAD staff to follow. Special circumstances may affect the process and will be handled on a case-by-case basis among the LEAD staff, with input from whomever they chose to confer with. The final decision on a case lies with the Alumni Association Director of Alumni & Student Enrichment and will be as consistent to these guidelines as possible. Once a decision is made, there is no appeal process.
