Recruiter Resources & Materials:
Principles of Good Practice

The University of Michigan is a standing member of the National Association for College Admission Counseling. Under NACAC, all college and university members agree they:

"will exercise appropriate responsibility for all people whom the institution involves in admission, promotional, and recruitment activities (including their alumni, coaches, students, faculty and other institutional representatives), and educate them about the principles outlined in this statement."

(NACAC Principles of Good Practice, 2000)

As an Alumni Student Recruiter, it is important to remember that students and their families view you as a representative of the university. NACAC guidelines simply cover how to conduct yourself in a professional manner. The impression you leave with people often shapes their image of the U-M, and it is crucial you exercise appropriate behavior.

Principles of Good Practice:

  • Alumni will refer prospective students to the OUA Web site or OUA office whenever they encounter a question they are unable to answer.
  • Alumni will clearly state that they are an alumni volunteer providing the alumni perspective and not an "official" representative nor acting "on behalf" of the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.
  • Alumni will refrain from using disparaging comparison of secondary or post-secondary institutions.
  • Alumni will keep information about applicants in confidence.
  • Alumni will not promise offers of admission or financial aid.

Specific Activities

For Adopt-a-School

  • Alumni will not drop in at the high school unannounced. Please schedule an appointment with the high school counselor.
  • Alumni will be respectful of the counselor's time. One or two visits per year are appropriate.
  • Alumni will be a local resource for the counselor, students and their families. Please remember to refer all questions that you are unable to answer to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

For College Fairs

  • Alumni will prepare for the fair by reviewing the pop quiz and FAQ list
  • Alumni will stand or sit behind the table. It is inappropriate to stand in front of the table.
  • Alumni will refrain from eating while at the table (a short break can be taken during a lull).
  • Alumni will arrive 30 minutes before the program to prepare the table and will stay until the program is complete. If you are delayed or unable to attend, please leave word with the fair host/high school office.
  • Alumni will refrain from making any comparisons of secondary or post-secondary institutions. Disparaging remarks of other institutions are never acceptable.

For Scholarship Recruitment

  • Alumni will always include parents/guardians when requesting to meet with students. Always arrange to meet them in a public place or your place of business.
  • Alumni will not publicly announce the amount of need-based aid awarded to individuals; however, amounts of no-need scholarships awards to individuals may be a matter of public record.

For Receptions, Send-off Parties, etc.

  • Alumni will choose locations for receptions that are open, accessible and welcoming to diverse population.
  • Alumni will refrain from scheduling receptions on dates or holidays that may be in conflict with religious observances.
