Underrepresented Minority Student Recruitment

"The evidence is in: a diverse learning environment engenders a heightened and more valuable teaching and learning experience for everyone, and produces alumni who are equipped to lead our state and nation into the future."

—Lester P. Monts
Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs
Senior Counselor to the President for the Arts, Diversity, and Undergraduate Affairs
Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of Music (Ethnomusicology)

Alumni participation is vital in providing enhanced personal follow-up to admitted underrepresented minority students—African American, Latino, and Native American—that encourages them to enroll at U-M.

The Alumni Association continually seeks underrepresented minority alumni who value an active, engaged and diverse student body and can underscore to students why it’s so important for them to continue the legacy of diversity which U-M so ardently supports. This very personal message comes from the voice of one who has succeeded, who has a firsthand account of what their years at Michigan means and how it has moved them in their careers and avocations.

Our goal is simple—to positively impact the number of underrepresented minority students enrolling at U-M by having them matched with correspondingly underrepresented alumni who can speak about his/her U-M experience. Alumni participation may be the deciding factor for these students choosing to attend Michigan.
