On the Job: Kevin Richards, '03, executive mortgage banker at Quicken Loans

In his job as is an executive mortgage banker at Quicken Loans, Kevin Richards advises clients on the home buying process and helps them achieve their financial goals. Hired in December 2003, he completed a four-week training program and then started "on the floor" of mortgage banking sales. Richards, 26, answers questions about this-his first full-time position after college-and about his employer.

What was your major?
Industrial and operations engineering.

Why did you choose to work at Quicken Loans?
I met a recruiter at the Michigan-Ohio State game in the fall of 2003. I was immediately taken aback by her passion and enthusiasm about the opportunities there. I loved the idea that I'd be joining a young, vibrant work force and that I'd be able to control my paycheck every month through my commissions.

What attracted you to the company? Were you interviewing with other companies at the time?
I am a very independent person and I loved the concept that every banker at Quicken Loans is able to run his or her own business. I also came in when the company was all in one location, but I knew that plans were in the works for expansion. The opportunity for immediate growth (through either leadership or banking promotions) was also very appealing to me. When I accepted this position I was only starting out with the interview process in general. I had interviewed with Boeing, but their only opening was out in California. When this opportunity presented itself I jumped on it right away!

What do you like about your career?
As I mentioned earlier, it's great to be able to have a say in your paycheck month in and month out. The people here are amazing and they truly care about your success. Most of all, I love that after working hard for the last four-plus years, I am now an executive mortgage banker and am able to work from home!

What makes you successful as a mortgage banker?
I think my greatest strength as a banker is my ability to listen to my clients. The majority of my business now comes from past clients and referrals, and I've been able to sustain a successful career here by making them realize that I care about their specific situation. You also have to be able to adapt to change in this industry and I've been able to do so with ease.

Why would other Michigan graduates be successful at Quicken Loans?
Michigan is a school that teaches you to be independent. We have a great team of trainers and leaders here, but in the end you really do run your own business on a daily basis. My time at Michigan had me more than ready to become an expert mortgage banker with this company.

What advice would you give other U-M alumni about opportunities here at the company?
My best advice is to take advantage of the job growth here. The economy in Michigan is tough to say the least, and we are one of the only companies truly committed to the creation of jobs. We have offices throughout Southeastern Michigan, and we'll soon be opening a top-notch facility in downtown Detroit. We have an industry-leading training program that will help you hit the ground running. If you are someone who embraces change, works hard and wants to be rewarded for your achievements and dedication, then this is a good place for you.
