Dear Applicant,
Thank you for your interest in Michigania, the University of Michigan's alumni family camp. This summer 70 individuals will be hired to help ensure Camp remains the special place it has been for the past 50 years. Staff members are hired to work in a specific program area and share responsibilities for the effective functioning of the Camp as a whole. You can expect to work six days per week, and even though working at a family camp offers more free time than a kids camp might, you are still expected to be a role model 24 hours per day. Michigania has been a special place to work since its inception. You can plan on meeting amazing UM alumni, getting to know kids and adults who will change your life, and making friends you'll keep for a lifetime. Congratulations on starting the journey toward becoming a part of the Michigania staff family!
Sincerely,
James McRae
Assistant Director, Michigania
Staff Application Process
- Read this page fully.
- Click on the link below to go to the online application.
- Plan to complete the application in one sitting—you cannot return
to edit your application once it has been submitted. You'll be asked for
complete work/volunteer history and complete contact information for
three references. These references should be professional in nature.
Please do not list relatives or friends.
*NOTE: Returning staff do NOT need to list references.
- You'll have the opportunity to select your top three program area choices. Only list areas in which you are interested and skilled. You may be offered positions outside of these three areas if selected, so weigh your choices carefully.
- Remember that you are applying for a job, not just a fun way to spend the summer. Do your best to sell your skills and experiences.
- Submit the application prior to 12/31/11 to be considered in the first round of hiring. Applications received after 12/31/11 will be considered on an as needed basis.
- If selected, you will be contacted by email to schedule an interview. Interviews will take place in Ann Arbor, by phone, or computer video chat between November, 2011 and February, 2012.
- Staff selections will be announced by email by March 1st, 2012.
*Please note that for 2012 summer season, previous employment with Michigania will be considered, but will not be a major factor in the hiring decisions.
Requirements for Employment
- All hired staff members must be at least 19 years of age or have completed their first year of college when summer starts.
- All first year staff members must be able to stay for the entire contract period listed below.
- All hired staff must be CPR/AED and first-aid certified prior to the start of the contract. (Specific areas may have other specialty certifications required)
- All hired staff must commit to training dates prior to the summer
during the winter and spring semesters.
*Previous experience working at a children's camp is suggested, but not required.*
Important Notes for the 2012 Season
- The dates for summer 2012 are:
June 2 - September 1, 2012. Starting date will vary depending on program area.
Plan on moving in a day prior to your start date. Work will begin at 8:00am on your start date and will end at 5:00 pm on September 1. Due to the importance of staff training, and to the fact that we expect that all weeks of camp will be filled, strong preference will be given to those applicants who are able to work the complete length of the contract. If you have any conflicts with the dates listed, it is your responsibility to bring these forward before or during your interview.
- Background Checks
In addition to the voluntary disclosure information you complete on the application, all individuals offered positions at Michigania will be asked to participate in a background check. This is in line with industry standards and is similar to what other child-care organizations are doing. More information will be provided to you once you've submitted an application.
- Salary
The base salary for a 12-week position is $1700 plus a $500 bonus upon completion of your contract for a total of $2200. Actual salary will be based on skills and experience. Salary will be paid out in four payments: 20% on June 30, and 40% each on July 31 and on the last day of camp. If you break your contract for any reason, that $500 bonus will be forfeit. That final bonus check will be mailed mid-September minus any damages or outstanding charges.
