I attended a career event at Ford Field on October 28 2010 that the Alumni Association coordinated. Though I enjoyed the presentations, I was able to connect with the managing director for Center For Entrepreneurship at the University of Michigan who incidentally was one of the presenters. After a brief exchange, we found out that I could help him with database design for the CFE. The following week, he called me in for an interview and I was subsequently offered a temporary position. I want to thank the Alumni Association and everyone who put this event together. You have extended a life line to one of many in this tough economy. - A true success story.

Finding a job that fits my particular skill set is not always easy for me, but inCircle made it just that. My experience is heavily weighted toward nonprofit marketing in membership-based organizations. Upon parting ways with the United States Tennis Association, I was thrilled to find the perfect position that allowed me to exercise my knowledge, skills, and abilities—and support my alma mater simultaneously. As luck would have it, the Alumni Association of the University of Michigan had posted my current position on inCircle. And, when I cold-called to inquire about the position, I was excited to receive a warm greeting from a fellow Michigan grad. Tapping into the Michigan network has changed my life, and I feel extremely fortunate to have had the support of fellow alumni, like my current manager.

On February 11, 2010, my life changed when I decided to attend an Alumni Association of the University of Michigan Career Boot Camp. At the time, I was working in a position at an organization that didn't really speak to my passion and interest in higher education. After attending the Boot Camp and scheduling subsequent private sessions with the professional coach and facilitator, Sally Schmall, I revamped my resume, developed my personal brand, and secured a position in higher education. Through continued coaching and other resources available through the Alumni Association, I've been able to transition seamlessly into higher education. In the fall of 2011, I will begin a doctoral program in higher education and will finally start working towards my goal to become a professor.

I was invited to speak at a career Bootcamp that the Alumni Association organized in Chicago. It was there that I connected with another speaker who was presenting. As a result of networking at the event with this speaker, I was invited to a breakfast seminar, whereby I was able to network with other professionals and ultimately was connected with Whirl Pool. We are now exploring the development of new recruitment practices designed to attract and retain top level talent at the new headquarters in Benton Harbor MI.

Without the opportunity to network at the Alumni Association’s career event, I would not have this business opportunity.

U-M student Karen Mallozzi, ’11, connects with FBI Special Agent, U-M alumni.

How did the Alumni Association Assist in Your Career Success?
I attended the Alumni Association’s 30-Minute Mentors program last fall, where I met with an FBI special agent. I had a lot of questions about the FBI that its Web site couldn’t answer, yet the special agent could. In a follow-up email after the meeting, he connected me with the woman in charge of hiring for the Detroit division of the FBI.

Additionally, the special agent invited me to attend The Great Lakes Violent Crime Seminar that the FBI was running on Michigan’s campus. The seminar was geared towards law enforcement, and I was the only student there. At the seminar, I got to watch presentations from FBI agents in the specific unit of the FBI that I want to work for. I learned so much about the day-to-day operations of this unit that I never could have learned without experiencing it firsthand.

I was also introduced to agents within that unit (including the unit’s boss) who provided me with fantastic career advice and who now serve as further contacts for me within the FBI. Without the opportunity to meet with the Special Agent through 30-Minute Mentors, none of this would have been remotely possible.
