Michigan Apprentice is open to juniors and seniors, and we have added one experience for graduate students this year. Those selected will shadow a successful U-M alumnus/a for one day at his or her company or organization. Travel and hotel expenses will be paid by the Alumni Association.

Public Policy
Alumna: Senator Deborah Cherry, ’76
State Capitol, Lansing Michigan

Senator Cherry has served her community with distinction for more than 30 years. She got her start in politics as a teenager as a member of a non-partisan student group. Since that time she has been active in politics as a volunteer, manager of campaigns, as a candidate, and as an elected official.
In 1988 Cherry was elected to the Genesee County Commission, where she represented the third district for six years and served three years as commission chair. During this time she earned her masters degree in public administration from UM-Flint.
Elected to the Senate in 2002 and 2006, she is a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, serving as minority vice chair on the sub-committees for community health and retirement. She also is a member of the sub-committee on Capital Outlay.
Cherry’s hard work and dedication is recognized at the highest levels of state government. She is a gubernatorial appointee to the Michigan Medicaid Long Term Care Task Force, created to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of long term care, the White House Conference on Aging, which is formed every 10 years and is responsible for setting the tone for the states senior issues and an appointee to the Michigan Task Force on Cervical Cancer Awareness, which she served as Chairperson.
Finance
Alumnus: Jordan Hymowitz, ’90
Philadelphia Financial Management, San Francisco, California

Hymowitz is the managing member of Philadelphia Financial Management of San Francisco, LLC. Hymowitz co-founded Philadelphia Financial Management of San Francisco, LLC in June 2004. Philadelphia Financial is an investment advisor for four hedge funds called the Boathouse Row funds and manages approximately $450 million of assets. He is the portfolio manager and the firm exclusively invests in financial services stocks (banks, insurance, credit cards, etc) on a global basis.
Hymowitz began his finance career in the research department of Montgomery Securities in 1993 as an analyst and moved onto Robertson Stephens in 1997. He then moved over to the buy-side and worked for Aesop Capital and later Level Global before starting Philadelphia Financial in 2004.
Business/Marketing
Alumnus: Mike Miller, ’96
Google office in Ann Arbor, Michigan

Mike Miller serves as head of the Google Ann Arbor office. He joined the Ann Arbor office after leading multiple teams in Mountain View over two and a half years in online sales and operations, most recently leading the AdWords TechB2B Sales Team and the North America Sales Operations Team. Since joining Google in 2006, Miller served on the AdWords Agency leadership team and helped form and lead AdWords’ North America Retail team. He also has worked on multiple cross-functional initiatives, assisting with the launch of AdWords products, HR tools and recruiting initiatives.
Prior to Google, Miller spent six years at Cisco Systems in San Jose, California, providing advisory services to senior executives of Global 200 companies on technology strategies as part of Cisco’s Internet Business Solutions Group. He primarily covered customers in financial services, hi-tech, and retail, focusing on customer service, HR, and e-learning solutions. In addition, he led internal projects for the Cisco Business Process Operations Committee. He also was a regular presenter in Cisco’s Executive Briefing Center.
Meteorology and News Reporting
Alumnus: Andrew Humphrey, ’92
WDIV Studios, Detroit, Michigan

Andrew Humphrey is a Local 4 Emmy Award-winning meteorologist. He is proud to have earned the AMS Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) distinction. These honors are indicative of Humphrey’s passion for weathercasting and telling a story to help people stay informed and safe.
Humphrey came to WDIV from a Fox affiliate in Toledo, Ohio, where he was chief meteorologist. Prior to that, he was seen globally on CNN and CNN International and got his start in Washington, DC, at the local NBC and Fox stations. He also worked as a research scientist at NOAA and NASA.
Andrew’s awards include a 2009 Emmy, the 2006 Spirit of Detroit Award from the Detroit City Council and the 2000 Community Service Award from NABJ.
Marketing/Branding
Alumnus: John Spain, ’07
SC Johnson, Racine, Wisconsin

John is the associate brand manager on the Ziploc brand at SC Johnson. Prior to working at SC Johnson, he spent seven years in management consulting working at PwC Consulting and IBM. During this time he had the opportunity to work on a wide range of clients and projects; from a small dot-com startup involved in selling capital equipment through an e-Marketplace to a multi-billion dollar automotive OEM who needed help to develop a brand Web site strategy.
While working in consulting, Spain returned to U-M to work on his master’s degree in business administration. After graduating, he changed careers to work in brand management. He has worked in the personal care category and now Ziploc containers. In his current role, Spain is responsible for advertising, shopper marketing and a number of new product development projects.
Law/Finance
Alumnus: Ernest J. Newborn II, ’83
USI Holdings Corporation USI Insurance Services LLC, New York

Newborn is senior vice president, general counsel and secretary of USI Holdings Corporation, the nation’s eighth largest insurance brokerage company. USI Holdings Corporation was a publicly traded NASDAQ listed company prior to its 2007 acquisition by Goldman Sachs Capital Partners.
In significant part through the management of the company’s in house lawyers and outside counsel, Newborn has ultimate executive responsibility for the legal health of the company and its subsidiaries and affiliates. As the company’s chief legal officer and corporate secretary, Newborn also is the company’s senior advisor to the board of directors on governance matters, and the senior management on strategic and operational concerns of the company, including matters involving the company’s acquisition activity, public reporting, material litigation and regulatory matters.
His insurance career began as associate general counsel for Anthem, Inc., now known as WellPoint, Inc., one of the nation’s leading health benefits companies. Prior to joining USI, Newborn was vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary at Acordia, Inc., which, at the time of Mr. Newborn’s tenure, was a publicly held insurance brokerage company. He also serves as the Chairman of the Board of USA Funds, the nation’s largest education and student loan guarantor.
Medicine/Surgery
Alumnus: Dr. Anthony Weinert, ’93
Henry Ford Macomb – Warren Hospital

Dr. Weinert is a physician and surgeon who specializes in foot and ankle disorders and has a solo private practice, which is located in Warren, Michigan. Dr. Weinert performs surgeries at various hospitals in the Metro Detroit area which include William Beaumont, St. John, Detroit Medical Center (DMC), Mount Clemens Regional and Henry Ford Health Systems.
Dr. Weinert is currently chief of podiatric medicine and surgery at Henry Ford Macomb – Warren, Hospital and has been the chief of the department for the past 5 years. Dr. Weinert is double board certified in both podiatric surgery and wound care management. He is a fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons and a Fellow of the College of Certified Wound Specialists. He treats a wide range of patients from pediatrics to the elderly with various foot and ankle disorders and also treats a lot of patients with diabetes. He trains and teaches residents all aspects of podiatric surgery and lectures to both physicians and to the general public on various foot and ankle problems. Dr. Weinert received a perfect (100%) score on his Press Ganey Patient Satisfaction and was honored for his accomplishment.
Dr. Weinert also is a team consultant for various high school, collegiate, and professional teams in the Detroit area. Dr. Weinert recently was honored with being one of America’s Top Doctors for 2009 and was filmed and part of a new program called “Health Heroes” which will be airing on the Discovery Channel.
Public Health
Alumnus: Grant Baldwin, ’94, PhD’03
National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, Washington, DC
This Michigan Apprentice opportunity is open to ONLY graduate students.

Dr. Grant Baldwin became the director of the Division of Unintentional Injury Prevention at the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control in September 2008.
Unintentional injuries are the leading cause of death for persons ages 1 to 44 years. DUIP is dedicated to reducing the number and severity of unintentional injuries through science-based programs and applied research. Dr. Baldwin joined NCIPC in November 2006 as acting deputy director. In this role, Dr. Baldwin assisted the NCIPC director in providing overall leadership and direction for the Center.
Prior to this appointment, Dr. Baldwin served as a senior advisor in the Coordinating Center for Environmental Health and Injury Prevention and the National Center for Environmental Health / Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry. Dr. Baldwin also spent several years in the ATSDR Division of Health Education and Promotion as a team leader in a group educating community members and health professionals about preventing exposure to toxic substances. He began his career at CDC in September 1996.
