Alumnus Dies in Iraq War

A Michigan Alumnus in the US Marines was killed March 26, 2003 in the war with Iraq. Maj. Kevin Nave, ’89, was with the 1st Marine Division, 5th Marines, 3rd Battalion. Nave was killed in a non-hostile vehicle accident, according to CNN. Nave was a political science major at the U-M and participated in the ROTC program. He was stationed at Camp Pendleton in California. He is survived by his wife, Carrie, and their son, Anthony, 6, and daughter, Maeve, 5.

Michigan Doctor Covers War

U-M graduate Sanjay Gupta, '90, MD'93, is doing double duty in the war with Iraq. Gupta, a neurosurgeon and a medical correspondent for CNN, traveled to Iraq with a group of Navy doctors called the Devil Docs. Sent to Iraq to report on the doctors and examine how they are pioneering faster ways to treat injuries during wartime, Gupta suspected he might have to wear his doctor hat, as well. Last week, he tried to save the life of a 2-year-old boy with a severe head injury; the boy was in a taxi that didn't stop at a US Marine checkpoint. Marines opened fire. Gupta performed emergency surgery, but the child died a few hours later.
