On this 10th anniversary, Alumni Association commemorates the tragedy by sharing these stories:

  • After September 11: this article in the early fall 2011 issue of Michigan Alumnus describes a U-M history class that examines the ramifications of September 11. In a sidebar to the article, four alums tell their September 11 stories.
  • Three Alumni Share Their Incredible 9.11 Stories: In this podcast, a companion to “After September 11,” you’ll hear how these alums survived that day. One was trapped in her apartment across the street from the twin towers, one piloted a commercial airplane and was forced to make an immediate landing, and one helped fellow firefighters in the rescue effort at ground zero.
  • U-M Unites: this article, from the Michigan Alumnus fall 2001 issue, tells how the University united in the days following the attacks. (Images courtesy of HathiTrust.)
  • Honoring Those We Lost: from the winter 2001 issue of Michigan Alumnus, these profiles focus on the 18 alumni who perished in the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and the hijacked airplanes. (Images courtesy of HathiTrust.)

In other media coverage of this anniversary, Jamie Gartenberg Pila is one of the children featured in The Children of 9/11, published in the September 12 issue of People magazine. Jamie had not yet been born when her father, Jim Gartenberg, ’87, perished in the North Tower of the World Trade Center on September 11. Jamie’s mother, Jill, reports that the 9-year-old is doing well and her Michigan ties remain strong. “Jamie has attended Michigan football games with family and friends and appreciates the Maize and Blue. She would make Jim proud.”
