The Alumni Association offers scholarships to highly qualified, admitted students who can enhance diversity at the University of Michigan in terms of race, gender, or ethnicity. The Alumni Association seeks to provide all alumni and future alumni with positive University experiences, including scholarships and the improvement of campus culture, which includes the diversity initiative. Currently there are a total of 113 LEAD Scholars on the three U-M campuses—Ann Arbor (109), Dearborn (2) and Flint (2).

About the Scholarship

Alumni Association LEAD Scholarship recipients will receive from $2,500 up to $10,000 per year (toward in-state tuition) or up to $15,000 per year (toward out-of-state tuition) renewable for a total of four years. To be considered for a LEAD Scholars award, admitted students must:

  • Be an incoming freshman
  • Authorize consideration for scholarships on their U-M application
  • Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Enroll full time
  • Have undergraduate status
  • Earn a high school GPA of 3.5 or higher
  • Have an SAT total score of 1820 or higher or an ACT score of 27 or higher
  • By enrolling, enhance diversity in terms of race, gender, or ethnicity

To continue receiving the Alumni Association LEAD Scholarship in their second through fourth years of study, students must maintain good academic standing defined as a cumulative U-M GPA of 2.0 or higher.

LEAD Scholarship timeline:

2/3 Application deadline for first round consideration

2/17 Notifications to students offered a first round LEAD Scholarship

  • The USPS is closed on 2/20 for Presidents’ Day, therefore award letters will be mailed on 2/21.
  • Students not awarded a scholarship at this time, will receive an email updating them on their status by 2/27.

3/14 Deadline for students to accept first round offers

3/23 Application deadline for second round consideration (extended from March 14)

4/6 Notification to students offered a second round LEAD Scholarship, (limited funds are available) (notification has been changed from March 19 to April 6)

4/27 Deadline for students to accept second round offers
