For Alumni and Friends

To help protect the critical role of the University of Michigan as a source of economic and social mobility, the Alumni Association has established the LEAD Scholarship fund to support the continued recruitment of a diverse student body. The Alumni Association, not the University, will take full financial and administrative responsibility for this new scholarship program.

Many alumni cite their exposure to a diverse student body as a major contributor to their future life success. The Alumni Association is committed to assuring diversity remains a vital component of the U-M experience. By supporting the LEAD Scholarship, alumni help secure enrollment of the best and brightest students at U-M – regardless of race, gender or national heritage.

Without the support of Michigan alumni, AAUM could not offer these scholarships to Michigan students. To show support for the value of diversity, download the donation form or make a gift online. For more information, contact Teresa Clark at 734.647.3254 or tmglenn@umich.edu.

Role of the Alumni Association
The Alumni Association strongly believes in the value of diversity at the University of Michigan and that scholarships that encourage diversity in this way enhance the student experience for all students as well as all of society. To that end, the Association’s board of directors approved the creation of this program. The Alumni Association (separately incorporated from the University) will generate private support for and administer these scholarships to enhance the diversity of University of Michigan student enrollment in terms of race, gender, ethnicity or national origin.

Impact of the Scholarships
The Alumni Association made 32 scholarship offers for the inaugural 2008-09 school year. The immediate reaction of recipients strongly suggests that these scholarships are likely to be extremely helpful and influential in their enrollment decision. The current goal is to make 25 new awards each year. However, a much larger program is being considered, and funding that expansion is the objective of this fundraising effort.
