Airline passengers will have to leave their cigarette lighters at home beginning Thursday, April 14. The Transportation Security Administration has banned lighters in checked or carry-on luggage on all flights, citing security threats as the reason for the new rule. Passengers carrying lighters will be forced to surrender them at airport security checkpoints; safety matches will still be allowed for now. Be prepared to pay a higher fee the next time you apply for a passport. Beginning this month, all American passport applicants will be charged an additional $12 fee. The surcharge will fund security enhancements to the US passport and issuance processes, including a redesign of the passport and an inclusion of a biometric identifier. To apply for or renew your passport, check out the Alumni Association’s visa and passport services.

“Terrific program throughout! I especially enjoyed the wonderful performances—Russia circus and ballet. Lunches ashore were also exceptional. Shipboard activities and staff likewise.” --Elizabeth Dulany, ’53, a traveler on the “Journey of the Czars” trip Enjoy the Alumni Association’s “Journey of the Czars” trip cruising from Moscow to St. Petersburg on the exclusively chartered 242-passenger Novikov Priboy.
