ASR FAQs

As you make those final calls to admitted students, remind them that the enrollment deposit deadline—Thursday, May 1—is fast approaching. For students intending to enroll at U-M for the summer or fall 2008-09 school year, the enrollment deposit of $200 must be postmarked by May 1. Students can send their deposit electronically or use the preaddressed envelope sent with their admit packet for this purpose. This deposit is nonrefundable, guarantees their space in the freshman class and represents their intention to attend U-M.

Do Your Part

The current recruitment cycle is winding down, and the Alumni Student Recruitment team is looking ahead to 2008-09! We hope you have had a memorable and satisfying experience, and we thank you for all the support you have given the ASR program during its seventh year of operation. If you have address/email updates to make, wish to request new schools or can no longer participate in the program, we need to hear from you. Contact Monica Casanova at becerram@umich.edu. However, we sincerely hope you stay involved and help recruit freshmen for fall of 2009.

Need to Know

We hope to expand the number of international alumni volunteers participating in the program and the number of countries covered. Currently, 39 international alumni student recruiters participate in 21 countries. More international volunteers are needed, particularly in Canada; European countries, especially France; Africa; Latin America and the Caribbean. If you know alumni living outside the United States who might be interested in joining the ASR program, direct them to the ASR Web site, www.umalumni.com/recruitment. We welcome new international volunteers at any time of the year.

Spotlight On

Many high school counselors and students in the Indianapolis area know firsthand that if U-M is in your future, you know Bill Harris. Signing on with ASR in 2002, Bill jumped right in by representing the University at the largest Indianapolis college fair, and he continues to do this faithfully each year. By adopting eight prominent high schools, his presence is now well known as he makes his annual fall visits. Further, he regularly acts as the resource person for his admitted students, making certain their questions are promptly and accurately addressed. For his long-term commitment to recruiting students, enthusiasm and love of his alma mater, we focus our bright maize and blue spotlight on our honoree, Bill Harris. Take a bow, Bill; you have earned it!

Campus Talk

Spring commencement is at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 26, and, for the first time in U-M history, will take place on the Diag. Graduation is the culmination of all your recruitment efforts. Think about it—the class of 2008 comprises the students you encouraged to attend U-M back in the spring of 2004. The University's honorary and undergraduate degrees are conferred at this program. Bob Woodruff, JD’87, ABC News anchor and special correspondent and a Michigan native, will address graduates and receive an honorary doctor of laws degree. Read more about graduation at www.umich.edu/~gradinfo/.

Graduating seniors and their guests are invited to join members of the U-M community for a University-wide reception following commencement. The reception, hosted by University Unions, will take place in the Michigan Union Art Lounge and will feature an array of Michigan memorabilia. Refreshments will be served. For information, contact the University Unions Arts and Programs office at UUAP@umich.edu or 734.763.3202. If you are in town, we encourage you to stop by and give these graduates—your graduates—best wishes.

Cyber Stop

You can now catch the lectures, debates, performances and other events that U-M hosts each year—from anywhere in the world. Michigan on iTunes U offers hundreds of University events in audio or video formats via the iTunes Store. The site features public content from all U-M departments and units and is free to use. Now that spring is here, high school juniors are starting to take the college application process seriously. This is a great site to show them the wide array of events they can experience as a student at Michigan. Check it out at www.itunes.umich.edu.
