The average desk worker has 36 hours worth of work piled up on her desk—and she spends up to three hours a week just looking for things! Don’t let a cluttered desk and office hamper your productivity. Janet Hall, a professional organizer and speaker known as the “organizing wizard” offers 10 tips for cleaning of your desk and keeping it clean, including:

  • Schedule a date and time with yourself to get organized.
  • Create a desk workbook to record notes, ideas and phone numbers instead of using sticky notes or scrap paper.
  • Schedule a time for regular desk “maintenance.” Also set aside some time to file and sort your paperwork.
  • Create a frequently called numbers list and store it underneath your mouse pad or inside a drawer.
  • Create a pending folder for papers or files that require more information, follow-ups, etc.
