On the Job

Do you get the sneaking suspicion your co-workers avoid you at all costs? If so, you might not be everybody's favorite officemate. But that doesn't mean you can't change how you're perceived! MSN.com offers the "Top 10 Reasons They Don't Like You at Work"—and what to do so you're soon known as Mr. or Ms. Congeniality. Behaviors to avoid include gabbing while others are trying to work, incessantly talking about your children, brown-nosing the boss, acting like a know-it-all and leaving messes for others to clean up. Check out the complete list online.

The word "networking" can make even the hardest worker cringe. Keith Ferrazzi, buzz-worthy networking expert and author of "Never Eat Alone and Other Secrets to Success, One Relationship at a Time," makes the concept easier for all of us. "I don't think of a network of people as a net, into which you wrangle contacts like a string of struggling cod," he says. Instead, Ferrazzi explains that networking can add richness to life by transforming business acquaintances into real friendships. In "Never Eat Alone," Ferrazzi advises readers with step-by-step tips on how to build relationships with people. "Don't keep score" and "Build it before you need it" are two of his golden rules. Visit the Never Eat Alone site for more information, tips and a weblog.

Whether you're an early bird or a night owl, the 8-to-5 workday can be a drag. Many night owls have a hard time being alert first thing in the morning, while some early birds lose steam well before quitting time. In "Work Strategies for Night Owls and Early Birds," Alumni CareerPort partner Monster emphasizes that you don't have to suffer just because your body clock is out of sync with your employer's hours. Instead, this article suggests practical ways to tailor your work habits to your body's quirks. For example, if you approach your boss to work alternate hours, be considerate of others in your office. Make sure you don't leave your colleagues hanging.
