February 2005
Pay adjustments averaging 3.6 percent are likely in 2005, which is only slightly higher than 2004’s 3.5 percent, according to Fortune magazine columnist Anne Fisher. The good news is that because that is an average, high-performing workers and high-potential people will probably get better treatment. Better yet, since corporate profits are up, bonuses may be higher this year, as well. But if you’re not happy with your current position, now is the time to look for another job—many companies post positions early in the year. If you think you might be one of those high-performance workers who deserves a bigger raise, visit the Alumni CareerPort Salaries/Negotiation Resource Center for tips on how to get the salary you deserve. We offer a compendium of resources that will help you navigate the best way to approach salary negotiations. Be sure to check with CareerPort partner Salary.com, the leader in compensation information for individuals, business managers and human resource professionals. Countless career experts cite networking as one of the top tools for advancing one’s career. Why not take advantage of your U-M connection to network? This spring, the Alumni Association will host Michigan Alumni Networking Nights in eight major cities, bringing the powerful Michigan network to alumni where they live. Each event features a prominent speaker ranging from Google cofounder Larry Page, ’95, to Monster founder Jeff Taylor. Attendees will also have the opportunity to meet other Michigan alumni working in a wide range of industries. These events are a great way to hear an engaging speaker, expand your network and get a taste of Michigan. We’ll be in Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Grand Rapids, Michigan, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and Washington, DC. Register today! This month, we continue our “Lessons in Leadership” series with Borders Group professionals. We talked with Anne Kubek, vice president of Borders stores, about changing careers. Anne started out as an English major at U-M and has held positions in several areas. She shares her insight and experiences in our featured article. The Alumni CareerPort has almost 200 jobs listed right now. Below are some recently posted positions. If these aren’t right for you, search the job board and you may just find your next job.
