January 2005
For three U-M business professors, 2004 was a good year. Business Week recognized “The Future of Competition: Co-Creating Unique Value with Customers” by C.K. Prahalad and Venkat Ramaswamy as one of the top 10 business books of 2004. It was also named one of the best strategy business books by Strategy+Business magazine. Strategy+Business also ranked Robert Quinn’s “Building the Bridge as You Walk on It: A Guide for Leading Change” as a top management book. Prahalad’s “The Fortune at the Bottom of the Pyramid: Eradicating Poverty through Profits” was selected by The Economist and Barnes & Noble as a top 10 book, while Amazon and Fast Company named it the best business book of the year. If you’re looking for a job with a specific employer, be sure to check the Alumni CareerPort Employer Directory. The directory provides a comprehensive list of employers registered with the Alumni Association and the jobs the employers are currently advertising. Those listings are linked directly to the Alumni Job Board, where you can get more information about the available positions. The directory also includes a brief profile of each employer and its history.
2003 wasn’t a great year for the labor market, and 2004 was only slightly better. But things are looking up in 2005, even though offshoring and labor-replacing technology will probably continue to constrain job growth in this decade. The key to finding jobs this year is knowing which industries will have higher demand. Fran Luisi, a principal of the executive search firm Charleston Partners, highlights the top job-growth industries this year: information technology and telecom, finance and accounting, health care, human resources and manufacturing. There’s nothing like a new year to motivate you to improve your life, and your career should be no exception. In this month’s featured article, Alumni CareerPort partner Monster details “10 Career Resolutions” that will help propel your career to new heights. Suggestions include “understanding company goals” so that you know how your job affects the big picture and “stretching your role” so you go above and beyond the call of duty to get noticed. The Alumni CareerPort has almost 200 jobs listed right now. Below are some recently posted positions. If these aren’t right for you, search the job board and you may just find your next job.
