please join the bi-monthly meetings held on the last Friday of the month at
the Shanghai Fraternity Association, 3/F South China Bldg., No. 1, Wyndham
St. Central (next to the Entertainment Building), from 12:30pm - 2pm. The
“next generation” of area alumni (recent graduates) are hosting
monthly happy hours in locations around the city and participating in occasional
badminton matches with recent grads from other universities.

- Sept. 26, 2006: In celebration of the UM Ross School of Business Worldwide
Club Day and the Chinese National Day, 50 alumni met at a networking reception
in Browns Pub in Beijing. Ling Lu, MBA'02, coordinated the event which featured
comments by Chris Cooper, BBA'88, MACC; 88, a partner with Price, Waterhouse,
Cooper, and filmed remarks by Ross Dean Robert Dolan. See photo here.
- September 27, ,2006: Fifty Hong Kong alumni met at the Ladies Recreation
Club in celebration of the UM Ross School of Business Worldwide Club Day at
a networking even coordinated by area alumni headed by Fred Lui, '79 BS CAUP,
'81MARCH. Christie Nordhielm, U-M Ross School Clinical Associate Professor
of Marketing spoke to the group and Ross Senior Development Officer, Barbara
Ackley joined them as well and presented Dean Dolan via film.
- Twila Tardif, U-M associate professor of psychology, will spend two months
in Beijing this summer at Peking University conducting research on children's
early language and emotional development. She also will be mentoring U-M undergraduate
students doing research at the university and at the PU Health Sciences Center.
- In May, Dr. Alan Deardorff, U-M professor of economics and public policy,
will host a series of lectures at the School of Public Administration at Renmin
University in Beijing. Professor Deardorff will discuss international trade
policy and China's relationship with the US and the world economy, including
the World Trade Organization.
- Dr. Edward Gramlich, interim provost and executive vice president for academic
affairs; Jun Ni, professor of mechanical engineering; and Stella Pang, associate
director of graduate education, will travel to China in April to commission
a joint institute for engineering between U-M and Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
The institute will create a unique link between the two universities by providing
a structure to manage and direct degree-granting programs offered by both
universities to students from both nations.
- The International Policy Center at the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy,
along with other university units, will sponsor 25 graduate students and two
U-M professors for their trip to China from Feb. 27 to March 3. They will
attend meetings in Beijing and Xian with scholars, business leaders and government
officials to learn more about China's growing economy and pressing policy
issues. Ann Lin, an associate professor of public policy and political science,
has led the class on this subject.
- The U-M Shanghai Alumni Club enjoyed an exciting afternoon of go-kart racing
at the Disc Kart in Shanghai. This was an opportunity for alumni, family and
friends to show off their driving skills and get to know other alumni. The
event took place on Saturday, February 18.
- Dr. James Woolliscroft traveled to Shanghai in mid-February to meet with
faculty from the medical school at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Last summer,
Shanghai Second Medical School merged with SJTU. The two faculty groups met
to share educational best practices and lay a foundation for innovative medical
student educational programs.
- "The Energy Future: China and the US"
Hosted by the William Davidson Institute and Michigan's Ross School of Business
This conference brought together top experts who have experience in academia,
business and government service to address China's domestic energy constraints
and dilemmas, its strategy to gain energy security, the implications for global
energy marketing and the actions the US ought to take in response. The conference
took place on Wednesday, February 8, 2006 on the Ann Arbor campus.
