Best Practices for Alumni Clubs

Best Practices: Example #45

Club nameU of M Club of Michiana
What made you choose this method of promotion? Many years ago, we had a club member on the station's board of directors. We did it for several years after.
Why is this means of promotion better than other methods? It was free exposure for the club and also provided a fun community service event.
Who helped to make this happen (stranger from local paper, AAUM, club member w/connections)?I believe it probably started with the club member on the board of directors.
How much did this cost the club?No cost.
How far in advance of needing it did you have to prepare the materials (how much planning did it take)? We didn't really have materials. We just needed five to 10 volunteers to show up for a few hours one evening. We brought some standard U-M stuff, including our own club's banner.
How did this benefit the club?We were allowed to be a sponsor of "Michigan Replay" on the station, without paying the sponsor dues. We also had six on-camera breaks during the evening where our club was on TV. We did receive some new active members from watching us on that show.
Is there additional information you would like to share?Almost two years ago, the station changed its plan. Instead of having community groups come in and answer the phones, they charged the groups for the advertising time. When the cost to us, for helping them, was going to be several hundred dollars, we opted out of continuing this event.
