Best Practices for Alumni Clubs

Best Practices: Example #4

Club nameU of M Club of Greater Flint
Program nameExploring Islam
Program dateActually, there were two programs; one in November and one in January. This was done based on audience response.
How was this program promoted?Through mailings to club membership and alumni in the greater Flint area. Also on campus and email promotion.
How many people were responsible for planning this program and about how much time did it require? The lecture committee consists of four board members. The International Studies faculty provided the resources. Dr. Joseph Rahme did the first lecture, which was well received. The attendees requested a follow-up and Rahme graciously accepted.
How much did this program cost the club?Light refreshments were served. Cost was about $300. We provided a stipend to Rahme of $50 which he donated back to scholarships for his department.
How much did the club charge participants? There was no charge to participants.
What "sold" this program to members (what was the highlight)? The program was successful because it was about a current event. Rahme was an excellent speaker and made the lecture interesting.
How many people attended? There were approximately 75 people at the first lecture and about 100 at the second, including students.
Is there additional information you would like to share? We are grateful that our faculty is available for our lecture series, however, we do not rely on them for every event. We try to keep the lectures diverse to attract alumni of all ages and interests.
