Best Practices for Alumni Clubs

Best Practices: Example #37

Club nameUniversity of Michigan Club of Manistee
What made you choose this method of promotion? The club has recently added Public Access TV to its media mix that includes radio and newspaper Public Service Announcements, our AAUM Web page and TrueBlue. This range is necessary to reach as many alumni distributed across a large area. While announcements are critical to each event's success, it is the post event media coverage that sets the stage for subsequent events.
Why is this means of promotion better than other methods? There is no single paper, radio or TV station that can reach all the alumni in our area. This dictates that announcements must appear in as many media as possible-daily and weekly papers, a variety of radio stations and local access TV PSAs.
Who helped to make this happen (stranger from local paper, AAUM, club member w/connections)?Club members in each community volunteer their media contacts and distribute agreed-upon messages. The AAUM has been particularly helpful in providing space in TrueBlue.
How much did this cost the club? There is no cost in either preparing or running the media PSAs. Each event committee prepares its own desired message and makes it available to those members able to deliver it to the chosen media.
How far in advance of needing it did you have to prepare the materials (how much planning did it take)? Most PSAs are written/submitted one or two weeks prior to the desired publication or announcement date. Each media has its own lead time standards, content and format criteria.
How did this benefit the club?Hopefully, the widest distribution of event announcements will not only increase attendance, it will also bring the club's activities to the attention of area alumni.
