Best Practices for Alumni Clubs

Best Practices: Example #31

Club nameU of M Club of Manistee
About how much money does this function/position raise for the club's scholarship fundIn In addition to a comprehensive AAUM mailing, scholarship donations are solicited at the annual dinner meeting and student send-off picnic using auctions and one-day-license lotteries. These efforts typically produce $200 to $300. The balance of the scholarship fund is appropriated from the AAUM's annual distribution.
Who provided your scholarship or student giveaway materials (silent auctions items, goodies for students, etc)? Most of our sale and auction items have been either donated or purchased by the club through the AAUM.
How many club leaders coordinate this activity? The scholarship committee basically consists of five members; however, several additional members usually review and rank student applications from a high school other than their own-this is particularly important when considering awards to be presented at three or four local high schools.
About how much time does it take to plan? The student send-off picnic committee spends about two months working out all the details including invitations, media releases, food, recreation and preparing individual send-off packages.
What kind of an impact does this have on the students from the club's community? The send-off kits are both well received and practical (pre-paid calling cards, pre-printed multiple choice postcards: Send Money, Having a Great Time, Send More Money, etc.) Other items include AAUM trinkets such as pens, note pads, etc.
