Best Practices for Alumni Clubs

Best Practices: Example #2

Club nameU of M Club of Greater Boston
Who was involved in this effort (full board, subcommittee, other)? Not sure in regard to the original drafting, but five or so years ago the board got together to update and add a few sections.
How much time did it take?It took about four or five hours when the revisions and additions were done.
What did you decide was the mission of your club? The club operates exclusively for educational, pleasure, recreation and other nonprofit purposes. The mission is to foster a spirit of loyalty and fraternity among graduates and students, promote the general welfare of the U-M as an educational institution, serve as a liaison between graduating high school students and the U-M, award scholarships to continuing students at the U-M, sponsor educational and recreational programs and to support local charitable activities in the greater Boston area.
How has having a mission/bylaws helped the club?It has helped to maintain organization and direction over time and allowed for consistency throughout turnover in board membership.
Is there additional information you would like to share? Our bylaws are always amenable to change based on the overall sentiment and majority vote of our board members. This allows for the club and board to change to reflect the times and changes in our world.
