The Alumni Association of the University of Michigan has created this privacy statement in order to demonstrate our firm commitment to protect alumni and all customer information. The following discloses our information gathering and dissemination practices for www.umalumni.com.

Use of IP Address

We use your IP address to administer our Web site and report statistics regarding use.

Registration Data

Our site’s profile form requires you to give us contact information (such as name and e-mail address), unique identifiers (uniqname and password) and demographic information (such as zip code or age). We use your contact information from the profile form to send information about the Association and promotional material. Public Forums

Security

This site has security measures in place to protect the loss, misuse and alteration of the information under our control. The Association utilizes the University standard Kerberos authentication engine to verify your identity upon login. Login is required for viewing or modifying contact information, registration, ordering and contest entry. This site utilizes SSL encryption. All credit card transactions are protected by SCMP protocol.

E-mail Addresses

The Alumni Association of the University of Michigan collects e-mail addresses through a number of methods, including registration data, subscriptions for e-newsletters and membership. E-mail addresses are used for sending out future information via email. Email addresses may also be used for general University of Michigan announcements. The e-mail address of a subscriber will never be disclosed to a third party.

Guidelines for Children

We will:

  1. NOT collect online contact information without prior parental consent or parental notification, which will include an opportunity for the parent to prevent use of the information and participation in the activity. Without prior parental consent, online information will only be used to respond directly to the child’s request and will not be used for other purposes without prior parental consent.
  2. NOT collect personally identifiable offline contact information without prior parental consent.
  3. NOT distribute to third parties any personally identifiable information without prior parental consent.
  4. NOT give the ability to publicly post or otherwise distribute personally identifiable contact information without prior parental consent.
  5. NOT entice by the prospect of a special game, prize or other activity, to divulge more information than is needed to participate in the activity.

Choice/Opt-out

Our site provides you the opportunity to opt out of receiving communications from us and our partners at the point where we request information about you.

To remove your information from our database, eliminate future communications or to no longer receive our services, you can select one of these options:

International Data Policy

Occasionally, the University of Michigan and/or the Alumni Association of the University of Michigan are asked to provide alumni data to graduates or other interested parties around the world. In the interests of protecting the privacy of its alumni, the University is quite restrictive about releasing such data.

The process (detailed below) requires specific support from individual alumni leaders, the Alumni Association, a sponsoring U-M school or college, and from the central administration of the University. The Alumni Association has agreed to act as a facilitator in this process. Alumni data is the property of the University of Michigan, which has final authority over decisions about the sharing of information.

International Alumni Data Request

The process outlined here is intended to protect the privacy of international alumni and to support regional organizational interests among them.

Generally, consent is required to share alumni data. Information about alumni will be shared without their consent upon completion of this document and review by the director of external relations of the graduate’s school/college, the assistant executive director of the Alumni Association, the Office of the Vice President for Development and, at their discretion, the Office of the VP and General Counsel.

The process for obtaining information can be started by the alumnus/a requestor FAXING a copy of this request with Sections 1 and 2 completed to Jo Rumsey, vice president for University Relations of the Alumni Association, at 734.763.6934. A copy of this form may be downloaded here.

Information will not be released until the form is received with original signatures on Sections 1 and 2. Mail the completed and signed form with attachments to:
