Despite similar upbringings in Southern California and global success, snowboarder Chloe Kim, who represents the U.S., and freestyle skier Eileen Gu, who represents China, are treated very differently by U.S. sports media. A new U-M study examines how belonging is created and contested for Asian Americans and the media’s role in shaping perceptions of Asian American athletes.
